9th Oct-loft Jazz Festival is Back

The OCT-LOFT Jazz Festival is an annual event in OCT-LOFT, Shenzhen, China, happening every October since 2011. It is hosted by Shenzhen OCT-LOFT Culture Development Co., Ltd.
The festival covers multiple units, including concerts, lectures, workshops, forums, screenings, exhibitions and so on.
Over 100 musicians coming from different places all around the world will present their most amazing works to the audience during the fortnight of this music festival.

行动派

爵士乐其实离我们有点远。

它存在于我们的想象之中。大多数时候,它只是三个中文字,代表着某一种说不明白的西方音乐。我们无法用“Jazz”的母语思考,甚至鲜有机会系统地学习它,我们的思维里、血液里、生活中,都很难找到与它有关的证据。

很遗憾,我们独特的生命体验,未能与之同路,这是我们的局限。但反过来看,这也是我们的幸运——以白纸般的、无知者的身份,介入到一种文化现象中间,以它为工具和载体,笨拙而迫切地自我表达,有意无意地对其产生作用,这正是我们所处的时代给予我们的机会。

没有认知上的包袱,甚至可以不用去与人争论“正宗的爵士乐是什么样子的”诸如此类的永恒话题,只管按照自己的想象去定义它,然后付诸行动就可以了。

一切困惑,都可以在行动中找到答案,同时又产生新的困惑——这也是回看前些年的爵士节,自我质疑远远多于自我满足的主要原因。

我们距离作为一种音乐体裁或是所谓的“一种生活方式”的爵士乐,已经越来越远,这并不是什么“进步”,只是口味上的喜新厌旧,积累在无数次尝试之后的自然选择。

不过话说回来,谁又能告诉我们一百年后的爵士乐会是什么样子的呢?

每当想到这些,你就很懊恼,于是无论做演出还是看演出都更卖力了。

Marilyn Mazur是全世界最负盛名的爵士女打击乐手、鼓手之一。在她乐手生涯的早期,就已在当代爵士领域取得了傲人的成就。她曾是Miles Davis、Wayne Shorter、Gil Evans、Jan Garbarek等音乐巨擘的乐队成员,也创立和参与了众多极具特色的乐团项目,包括由10位斯堪的纳维亚女性乐手与1位舞者组成的跨界乐团Shamania等。她是当之无愧的“打击乐女皇”。

Marilyn Mazur is one of the world’s most prestigious female drummers and percussionists. She reached iconic status on the contemporary jazz scene in the early years of her career. Playing in the eighties with titans like Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Gil Evans and Jan Garbarek, she has also formed and participated in various distinctive projects focusing on her own music, including the large orchestra Shamania, which gathered 10 strong female Scandinavian music profiles and a dancer. She is truly the “Queen of Percussion”.

The Makiko Hirabayashi Trio is known for their vibrant interplay and strong compositions with a great story telling quality, which can take you in surprising directions, once described in Jazz Special as “deeply integrated, fiercely vibrant trio playing”. Both their compositions and playing have a certain kind of lightness or transparency to it. Amongst thousands of piano trios, they earn their place as a personal voice that cannot be heard elsewhere. Elements of Far Eastern music, Nordic moods, jazz and classical music are all molded uncontrivedly into an intriguing, compelling sound of their own.

Mn’JAM experiment体现了一种只可能发生在21世纪的视听表演——被创新科技与一个不可避免全球化的时代所推动,他们的创作核心是整合过去、现在、未来音乐表演中的可能性,而这个想法通过融合同步的声音与影像为媒介进行延伸。 

混合人声和电声乐器、城市的节奏与传统旋律、声效循环和吉他独奏、唱机转盘与原声鼓的同时,结合预先录制的编曲与即兴创作的视听素材,所有这些使得Mn’JAM experiment的演出成为一种鲜明且独特的体验。

Mn’JAM experiment presents an audio-visual performance that is only possible in our 21st century. Fuelled by new technologies and the inescapable globalization age, this project has at its core the will to seemingly integrate past, present and future possibilities within musical performance. This desire reaches out to other mediums by fusing, at the same level, sound and images. Mixing acoustic, electric and electronic instruments; urban rhythms and traditional melodies, vocal loops and guitar solos, turntables and acoustic drums while combining pre-composed and improvised audio-visual material, makes this a clear-cut synesthetic experience.

Schnellertollermeier是一个以吉他为主导的瑞士新生代三重奏乐队。他们的音乐既无规律可循,更不受流派的约束,从现代创作到极简音乐,从即兴音乐到摇滚乐,都被他们轻易地把玩于手中,直击听众的脑袋。其传达的意象像被某种统一的能量所支配的有机整体,爆发力十足,同时富有美感与深度。他们出版于2015年的专辑《X》引起世界各地的热烈反响,被美国《华尔街日报》评选为“2015年度最佳十二张专辑”之一。

Schnellertollermeier play music without compromises. Ranging from modern composition, minimal music and improv to brute rock music, their style defies genre boundaries with an instrumental power that lets heart beat the head easily. The idea of a band that sounds like one organism can be perceived in a unified energy – a music containing as much explosive force as beauty and depth. Their third album “X“ (Cuneiform Records, US) received enthusiastic critics from all over the world and made it into the list of the 12 best albums of 2015 in US-Wall Street Journal.

Jozef van Wissem既是一位先锋作曲家,也是一位传统巴洛克鲁特琴演奏家,因此他熟悉这两个截然不同的世界。带着那把为他量身定做的漆黑的鲁特琴,他曾在世界各地不同的场所进行了超过1200场独奏演出,包括在教堂。他和著名电影导演贾木许(Jim Jarmusch)合作发行过三张专辑,并凭借其《唯爱永生》电影配乐在2013年获得了戛纳电影节“最佳配乐奖”。

“He sets the listener into a private world, looking out through a glass darkly, such is the intense quality of the music. Brevity, simplicity, directness is the key.” (The Quietus)

Van Wissem is both an avant-garde composer and a baroque lutenist, and thus no stranger to dichotomy. He’s performed over 1200 solo lute concerts in churches and at concert venues around the world, playing his all black, one-of-a-kind baroque lute custom build for him. Van Wissem has released three records with the film director Jim Jarmusch. In 2013 he won the Cannes Soundtrack Award for best score at the Cannes Film Festival for Only Lovers Left Alive.

Eli Keszler is a New York-based artist, composer, and percussionist. “Eli Keszler’s work presents several paradoxes. A percussionist with roots in punk rock and free improvisation, he fuses chaos and order in his drumming…”(New York Times)

对于Click#15你绝不会陌生。主创Ricky早已在摇滚圈小有名气,从Rustic到Rickysixx Project再到Flaming Heat,经过一层层的蜕变,风骚又Boogie的Click#15终于在2015年诞生。

Ricky独具代表性的舞台表演以及华丽的嗓音,精湛的琴技无时无刻不主宰着整个乐队;杨策,一个炙手可热的天才键盘手,众多乐队都想把他占为己有,这却挡不住这个要把自己变成Groove的“黑小孩”加入Click#15;镇静的鼓手崔骏虽有一个看起来夸张的长发造型,但是在现场演出中,他永远都是最理性的那一个,他坚信鼓手的职责便是打出稳健以及最有律动的Groove!

Click#15 is definitely no stranger to the audience. The band’s founder Ricky had previously made a name for himself with Rustic, Rickysixx Project, and Flaming Heart. After all that transformation, the funky, boogie Click#15 finally formed in 2015.

Ricky’s unique stage performance style, magnificent voice, and polished guitar skills lead the band every moment. Yang Ce is an uprising talented keyboardist, whom many bands sought after, but nothing could stop his groovy heart and joining Click#15. The calm drummer Cui Jun’s long hair is in great contrast to him being the most rational one during live shows, because he believes that a drummer’s duty is to deliver the most reliable and rhythmic grooves.

Zbigniew Chojnacki,92年生,是一位来自波兰的手风琴演奏家及即兴音乐家。手风琴在爵士乐中有着悠久的历史,但它远不如其他乐器那样常见,而他的手风琴独奏还会用到一排效果器踏板和一台笔记本电脑。从明亮的民谣小调,跳跃到充满神经质的狂想曲,他将为我们展现这古老的乐器也能爆发出如此巨大的能量。尽管年纪轻轻,他已同众多乐手、乐团有过合作,除了法国著名手风琴大师Richard Galliano,还有Peter Orins、TOC、Joelle Leandre、Hubert Zemler、Michał Urbaniak等等。“旧洗衣机、一片草地、汽车发动机的声音,甚至场地中间的一把椅子,都能让人激发出即兴的灵感。”他曾如是说。

Zbigniew Chojnacki – accordion player, improviser. While accordion has a lengthy history in jazz, it’s far from a common instrument. Zbigniew Chojnacki supplants a grimy Hammond B3-like insistence with an array of pedals and a laptop. His music ranges from bright, folksy melodies, to the fantasia of measured blurts. Despite his young age already he worked with many distinguished musicians improvised music scene, among others, Richard Galliano,Peter Orins, TOC, Joelle Leandre, Hubert Zemler, Michał Urbaniak, etc. “Old washing machine, a blade of grass, the sound of the engine of the bus, or even usually a chair in the middle of a scene can be inspiring.”(Zbigniew Chojnacki)

Marcin Pater Trio是由颤音琴手Marcin Pater与两位老友Mateusz Szewczyk和Tomek Machański组成的三重奏——成员都是波兰卡托维茨卡罗尔·希曼诺夫斯基音乐学院爵士与流行音乐系的校友。Marcin Pater最早萌生了组建乐队的想法并作为队长展开创作,围绕通俗爵士这一主题。颤音琴轻快活泼的旋律引领乐队风格,赋予独特的声觉魅力,使得这支乐队别具一格。

Marcin Pater Trio, a band of three friends (Marcin Pater, Mateusz Szewczyk & Tomek Machański) – alumni of the Faculty of Jazz and Popular Music of Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland. The idea of forming the band was born on initiative of a vibraphonist – Marcin Pater. Their music is primarily leader’s compositions, which oscillate around widely understood jazz. It can be characterized by light and lilting melodies played by vibraphone which is leading the band. The instrument give them unique and original sound which makes the band unconventional.

这是一个变化莫测的有趣组合,古灵精怪的琵琶和飘飘欲仙的笛子是他们的主干,他们也会随机地使用各种自己喜欢的乐器以及声音创造物,自如地任游乐空时而打破,时而还原。他们的音乐也许像咒语,也许像密码,也许像绕口令,奔奔波波,波奔,波奔波,奔灞,波灞,波灞,大家可以自然地奔波不要管它。

Ben Bo Er Ba & Ba Bo Er Ben is an ever-changing, fascinating duo. Quirky Pipa and spiritual flute are the backbone, the two artists also randomly utilize all kinds of instrument they like, wandering freely in the musical realm, breaking and reconstructing the atmosphere. Their music may be a spell, a password, or perhaps a tongue-twister: ben ben bo bo, bo ben, bo ben bo, ben ba, bo ba, bo ba… Feel free to carry on “ben bo”ing.

Akosh S.(全名为Akosh Szelevényi),匈牙利萨克斯演奏家,1966年生。作为一名热爱自由的艺术家,Akosh S.在马札儿人的民谣和自由爵士之间,创造他独特的音乐。

Akosh S.组建了自己的乐队Akosh S. Unit,并曾同Joëlle Léandre、Gildas Etevenard、Hamid Drake等著名乐手合作,演奏爵士和即兴音乐。Akosh S.是充满争议的法国传奇摇滚乐手Bertrand Cantat的好友,并参加过Bertrand Cantat的著名乐团Noir Désir的录音和巡演。Akosh S.还与法国著名舞蹈家Josef Nadj有过密切合作,担任作曲和配乐,并进行了世界巡回演出。2017年以来,他还开始了与法国说唱歌手Marc Nammour的合作。此次,Akosh S.将携两位来自匈牙利首都布达佩斯的新锐音乐家,组成为此次OCT-LOFT国际爵士音乐节准备的特别三重奏前来献演。

Akosh S. (Szelevényi), Hungarian saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, improviser and composer. He has been living in France since ’86. As the leader and founder of his group Akosh S. Unit, he has released many records at Universal. He once records and tours with the rock band Noir Désir, and he works with choreographer Josef Nadj, cultivates improvised music with JoëlleLéandre, Gildas Etevenard, Hamid Drake, etc.

He composes music for theater, contemporary dance, films, and collaborates with French rappers Marc Nammour. Since 2016, he starts works with some young Hungarian musicians, it is not by chance that he comes to Shenzen with Peter Ajtai double bassist and Szilveszter Miklòs drummer, two young figures already emblematic of music current creative in Hungary.

铃木勲,日本爵士低音提琴巨匠,同时也是多乐器演奏家、作曲家、编曲家、制作人及乐队领队。受到Art Blakey的鼓舞,他于1970年去到纽约并加入到Blakey的传奇乐队Jazz Messengers之中。在那期间,铃木勲与无数爵士大师一同合作和录制作品,包括Thelonious Monk、Charles Mingus、Ella Fitzgerald、Wynton Kelly、Bobby Timmons、Jim Hall和Ron Carter等等。至今已86岁的铃木勲,在65年的音乐生涯里发表了超过50张专辑,其中数张获得著名的“日本爵士奖”。所有这些,足以证明他在日本爵士世界里独一无二的主导地位。他曾被网络电台“瑞士爵士国际广播电台”评选为“世界上最好的二十位爵士音乐家”之一,大家都称他为“爵士教父”。

Isao Suzuki is the grand master of jazz in Japan. He is a bassist, multi instrumentalist, composer, arranger, producer and bandleader. In 1970 he went to New York at the encouragement of Art Blakey and joined his lengendary group JAZZ MESSENGERS. During this time, he worked and recorded with Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald, Wynton Kelly, Bobby Timmons, Jim Hall, Ron Carter and others. With more than 50 albums released, including several winners of the prestigious Japan Jazz Prize award, Suzuki’s reputation as a unique leader of jazz in Japan has been secured. He has been chosen “20 best jazz musicians in the world” by the Internet radio called “Radio Jazz International of Switzerland” and has gotten of “JAZZ GOD FATHER”.

Trumpet player and improviser/composer Peter Evans has been exploring solo trumpet music since 2002 and is widely recognized as a leading voice in the field, having released or attended nearly 40 recordings over the past decade. He has worked with some of the leading figures in new music: Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, Barry Guy, Clayton Thomas, Jim Black, Okkyung Lee, Sam Pluta, Zach Hill, Steve Shick, John Zorn, David Taylor, etc.

梅津和时,日本自由即兴萨克斯演奏家,1949年生于宫城县仙台市。在就读日本国立音乐大学期间,开始演奏爵士乐。七十年代,他和钢琴手原田依幸等人组成了乐队“生活向上委员会大管弦乐团”,乐团成员装束花哨搞怪,演出幽默诙谐,在日本国内大受欢迎,并将自由爵士带上了NHK等主流媒体。除了爵士,他还涉足演歌、流行、前卫摇滚、朋克……在数十年的音乐生涯里,他与无数知名音乐家合作过,包括B.B. King、Sunny Murray、David Murray、William Parker、Barre Phillips、Peter Brötzmann、John Zorn、George Lewis、Marc Ribot、山下洋辅、大友良英、坂田明、吉田达也、三上宽等等。

Kazutoki Umezu was born 1949 in Sendai, Miyagi prefecture. He started to play Jazz when he was a student of Kunitachi Music University. In the 1970s, he formed a band called “Seikatsu Kōjyō Iinkai” with pianist Yoriyuki Harada. With their humorous playing and creative costumes, they were popular in Japan and put free jazz on mainstream media like NHK. Besides jazz, Umezu also plays enka, pop, progressive rock, punk and so forth. Throughout decades of his music career, he has collaborated with numerous famous artists, including B.B. King, Sunny Murray, David Murray, William Parker, Barre Phillips, Peter Brötzmann, John Zorn, George Lewis,Marc Ribot, Yosuke Yamashita, Otomo Yoshihide, Akira Sakata, Yoshida Tatsuya, Mikami Kan and many more.

Hamid Drake,美国爵⼠⿎⼿和打击乐⼿,被⼴泛认可为爵⼠乐和前卫、即兴⾳乐中最好的打击乐手之一。Hamid Drake的打击乐演奏是“神秘”的,在其丰富的演奏经历中,涉足⾃由爵士、摇滚、R&B(节奏布鲁斯)、雷⻤、放克和世界音乐,熟悉北非、⻄非、印度、加勒⽐和拉丁打击乐的繁复技巧,被称为“一个人的打击乐团”。

Pat Thomas,英国爵士钢琴家,8岁就开始弹钢琴。某次在电视上看到加拿大传奇爵士钢琴家Oscar Peterson的演奏后,他决定投身于爵士。九十年代,英国即兴吉他手Derek Bailey曾邀他一同演出,并从1992年起,其成为英国自由爵士鼓手Tony Oxley四重奏的成员之一。此外,他与Evan Parker、Oliver Lake、Han Bennink、John Butcher、William Parker和John Russell等自由爵士名人都有过合作。

Hamid Drake is an American drummer and percussionist widely regarded as one of the best percussionists of jazz, avant-garde and improvisation music. Known as “one-man percussion band”, Drake’s playing is “mysterious”- he touches numerous music styles, such as free jazz, rock, R&B, reggae, funk and world music, and he knows the sophisticated percussion skills of North Africa, West Africa, India, Caribbean and Latin area very well.

Pat Thomas is an English jazz pianist who began playing the piano since the age of 8. Thomas was inspired to take up jazz after seeing legendary pianist Oscar Peterson’s performance on television. In 1990s, Derek Bailey invited him to perform together and since 1992, Thomas has become a member of Tony Oxley Quartet. He has collaborated with Evan Parker, Oliver Lake, Han Bennink, John Butcher, William Parker and John Russell and so on.

Two of the most influential artists in Lithuania, Vladimir Chekasin and Vladimir Tarasov share the glorious years of collaboration as a trio with Vyacheslav (Slava) Ganelin. The legendary Trio has nurtured the aesthetics of the Vilnius jazz school and was arguably the world’s greatest free jazz ensemble. The duo have performed on the stage of OCT-LOFT Jazz Festival in the last year, and they will come back with the main theme “Rondo à la Stravinsky” this time!

“Café OTO has become a crown jewel,” says former Sonic Youth singer and guitarist Thurston Moore. “It’s by far the most critical listening room in London.” Café OTO, opened in April 2008 with the aim of providing a home for creative new music that exists outside of the mainstream, is a 150-capacity venue in Dalston, east London. It comprises one large cafe/performance space open during the day serving food and drink with an evening program of live music almost seven nights a week. It has low ceilings, creaky old furniture, no green room for the musicians to hide in and no stage. Yet it has become one of the best known and loved spaces for experimental music in the world, attracting regular performers such as Moore and the Sun Ra Arkestra, as well as the occasional superstar such as Anthony Braxton and Yoko Ono.

The “1369”, was located at 1369 Cambridge St., Inman Sq., Cambridge, Ma. Today it is a cafe. Between 1984 and 1988 it was a happening.

“A Place for Jazz” was filmed over the course of three years at the 1369 Jazz Club. Beginning in 1985 and concluding in August, 1988, award-winning filmmaker Richard Broadman, cameraman / assistant producer, John Bishop, and Harvard University Jazz Program director Michael Haggerty, recorded live performances and in-depth interviews with local musicians, club staff, audience members, and some of the most important Jazz artists of the time. Among those interviewed and performing live are Joe Lovanno, Archie Shepp, Steve Lacy, Henry Threadgill, Mel Lewis, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Andrew Cyrille, Kenny Werner, Ricky Ford, and Fred Hopkins.

After Sunny’s Time Now, his authoritative portrait of the American Free jazz drumming legend Sunny Murray, Luxembourg filmmaker Antoine Prum turns his attention to the British Free Improvised Music scene in this new feature-length music documentary. Branching out from a three-day festival in Berlin conceived and organised for the purpose of the film, Taking the Dog for a Walk maps the scene of British Improvisers, past and present, retracing the road that led from its emergence and emancipation in the 1960s to the recent (albeit small) surge in popularity as talented new players and dynamic venues are coming to the fore.
