“Insects, the most diverse group of animals, include more than a million described species in the world. In existence for 400 million years, insects may be found in nearly all environments, including desert, waters, terrains and mountains, from the two poles to the equator,” reads the exhibition profile.

Various specimens at the exhibition.

The exhibition, showcasing specimens the Shenzhen Museum has collected from around the world, discloses the secret to insect abundance: They have an impressive ability to breed eggs to survive into adulthood and the cycle of reproduction resumes quickly; they are small and their simple body structures are easily subjected to genetic mutation, so they can harbor a tremendous amount of genetic diversity; the different species contain a wealth of genetic data that gives them the necessary adaptations they need to thrive in a range of environments across the planet; their wings and exoskeletons work like body armor and they possess sensitive organs of perception, protecting themselves against the outside world; their mouth forms are multiple, so they can survive by eating the roots, stems, leaves, seeds, pollen, nectar of specific plants and blood.
