Thelonius Monk, a jazz guru who went from Harlem to the cover of Time magazine, has written a unique definition of jazz: Jazz and freedom are inseparable, and nothing more. If you have to add something, it just complicates it. Jazz is for you to think about, you think about it, you study it, you get it. Like Miles Davis, jazz itself is a cloud shrouded in mystery, an indispensable unpredictability that makes it a magnet for live audiences.
