Since the launch of Shenzhen Fringe Festival in 2010, “Art Everyone, Stage Everywhere” has always been our belief. During this decade, Shenzhen Fringe Festival constantly endeavours to remoulding culture rather than searching and intervening in urban culture.

The year 2020 has given us extra time to discover, to record, to think about everything that we take for granted. The desire for people to connect with each other has always been there, but it is just buried under the virtual network in our daily life, thus conveying that desire is at the heart of performing arts. The special circumstance in this year, however, snows that the art are unabated. When seeing the enthusiasm of artists from all over the world to participate in the festival, I still miss the touch of being an organizer, and the presence of being human and being together with others. There are difficulties, but there is always a way, right?

Shenzhen Fringe Festival has been seeking for a breakthrough. This year, the festival focuses on four major areas: Crossover Cooperation, Young Cultivation, New Work Commission and Local Participation, and divides into six sections: Fringe Stage, Fringe Open, Fringe Picnic, Fringe in Town, Fringe Shop and Fringe Online. We turn the public spaces such as the rooftop, park, street, bus and book bar into performance venues, in which way we become part of Shenzhen culture and spirit. At a time when this special situation tries to distance us with others, the online performances of the overseas fringe artists has tightly connected Shenzhen with the world. Yes, Fringe Stage is everywhere.

This year, we have invited Evening Cinema, a band from Japan, to create the theme song for Shenzhen Fringe. Just as the lyrics ‘beat as one’, we hope that art can bring us energy and resolve the conflicts in the society, and even can lead the citizens to pay attention to different groups of people. We believe it would be the meaning behind what we are doing.

Arts matter and it is necessary. All we have tried to do is to get you out of the house and invite you to join us at the venue. We share art, and we share feelings. Arts give us hope and make us strong. Look forward to having fun with Shenzhen Fringe together!
